Transforming societies central to 2012 World Press Freedom
Day celebrations
The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Tanzania Chapter in association with
the Tanzania Media Fund (TMF) are organising a World Press Freedom Day
commemoration event to be held at Mlimani City Hall on the 3rd of May, 2012.
The event is expected to start at 08:30am and is open to all journalists. Deputy
Speaker, Parliament of Tanzania Hon. Job Ndugai will bless the proceedings as the
guest of honor. This year’s celebration carries the theme ‘Media Freedom Helping to
Transform Societies’.
Among other things, the event will be marked with a dialogue that will focus on how to
transform Tanzanian media with presentations from some of the outspoken media
personalities; like Ayub Rioba from the School of Journalism and Mass
Communication (SJMC), Ms. Rosemary Mwakitwange from the East African Business
Centre, Ms Suzan Mungy, Director of Events at Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation
(TBC) and Social Affairs analyst Mr Deus Kibamba.
Stakeholders will discuss how the media industry in the country performs and suggest
solutions on how it can be improved in a way that can transform societies for the
better.
There will be testimonies from some of the journalists who have been victims of media
freedom violations and a book that contains articles on the state of media in Africa
South of Sahara, known as So This Is Democracy will be launched. Some of the
journalists and photographers will display their works.

Other stakeholders present will be members of the academia, government ministries
and agencies’ representatives, media owners, development partners and members of
parliament who are ardent users of the new media.
MISA-Tanzania (MISA-TAN) is one of the Media Institute of Southern African (MISA)
chapters established in 1997 as a non-governmental organization (NGO) under
society’s ordinance, 1954 with the major objective of promoting a free, independent
and pluralistic press in service of democracy, good governance and development in the
country.
One of the responsibilities of MISA-Tanzania is to publicize the WPFD commemorated
each year on May 3rd to recognize the role of free, independent and professional media
in promoting democracy and good governance, as expressed in Article 19 of the
Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
